Graduate Concentration in Women's Studies

Beginning in the spring semester of 2006, students in the English, History, Liberal Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Global Affairs, and Criminal Justice programs at Rutgers-Newark may elect to pursue a concentration in Women's Studies along with their course of study established by their graduate program. Because of its interdisciplinary methodologies and epistemologies, women's studies has become central to a network of areas of inquiry in the humanities, social sciences, arts, and sciences. This option to concentrate a portion of their graduate work in women's studies offers students outstanding instruction, mentoring and opportunities to develop research skills with highly qualified instructors. Developing analytical skills regarding gender relations at the graduate level will help students to address intellectual questions that are central to concerns of all of the involved disciplines.

The graduate concentration consists of a total of twelve credits. Students will take two courses cross-listed with Women's Studies from their own department and two core courses offered by the Women's Studies Program:

26:988:532 History and Theory of Women's/Gender Studies

26:988:570 Feminist Research and Methods

Because each program is unique, and the way that the Graduate Concentration in Women's Studies dovetails with each program is slightly different, students should seek advisement from the Director of the graduate program in their own department as well as the Director of Women's Studies. In general, for M.A. and M.P.A. students, the Concentration may be pursued as a concentration within the course of studies established by the graduate programs. Students seeking the M.S. in Global Affairs may pursue a three-course gender concentration within the program; the required Women's Studies core courses may not be counted toward the requirements for the M.S. in Global Affairs. Thus, students pursuing the Graduate Concentration in Women's Studies in this program will need to plan to take the Women's Studies core courses in addition to the 40 credits required for the M.S.
